Abstract

Epidemics of yellow fever or black vomit, as the

disease was also known, have been a constant in the history of

Yucatán, from colonial times to the 20th century. The prima-

ry objective of this article is to analyze the demographic im-

pact of the outbreaks recorded between 1902 and 1906 in the

city of Mérida, a period during which the disease maintained

a continuous presence in the region. The lack of studies with a

demographic focus on the period in question motivated this de-

tailed analysis, which is framed in the acceptance of the theo-

ries of Carlos Finlay, who identified the mosquito as a vector of

the disease. The main source for this work is the death records

accessed through the Family Search portal. Additionally, the

General State Archive and the Yucatan Library were consulted

to complement and enrich the research.
